You don’t have to visit ski resorts only in January or February

It is something of a tradition for us to take a skiing trip in the New Year and below is the list of this year’s top-rated locations in Europe:

France:  Val d’Isere, Meribel, Courchevel, Chamonix

Austria: St Anton, Kitzbuhel, Mayrhofen

Switzerland: Zermatt, Verbier

Italy: Cortina D’Ampezzo, in the Dolomites

Then there is Canada’s Whistler, and increasingly, locations in the USA, including, of course, Aspen in Colorado but also Vail, the state’s largest resort.

Japan, too, is becoming a ski destination, with four interlinked ski resorts, about 90 kilometers from Sapporo on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, known as Niseko United; they include Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, and An’nupuri.

But why not consider skiing holidays at other times of the year? Believe it or not you can go skiing in the Andes, just not in January or February.

The best time for skiing here is June to October, but early August to early September promise the deepest snowpacks and best powder, as well as the lowest crowds and one of the best-known resorts is Cerro Catedral, in the Patagonia region of southern Argentina.

A new and increasingly popular holiday combines snow sports with music festivals.

This is a selection of a few of the better-known ones:
