Suffolk Jewels – Minsmere
Minsmere nature reserve
If wildlife, especially birds, and getting out in the fresh air somewhere tranquil appeals there is nowhere better than the RSPB nature reserve at Minsmere on Suffolk’s East Coast.
The reserve is a regular focus of attention on the BBC’s Springwatch.
The reserve’s mixture of wetlands, forest and dunes offers something for everyone. You can explore on your own. Perhaps follow the 2-mile Coast Trail circuit or take a guided walk (available from May 26).
There are seven hides from which to view the wildlife and a public viewing platform. Three of the hides are wheelchair accessible. There’s advice from volunteer guides for those new to bird watching.
For the children try Wild Zone and Wild Wood Adventure. The Wild Zone offers fun activities including a play tree and the chance to become a bittern or a sand martin. In the Wild Wood Adventure children can build a den or seek and find minibeasts.
Other facilities include a tearoom, where you can enjoy a snack or a meal, which uses Suffolk produce wherever possible. The shop stocks a large selection of bird food, gifts and bird watching equipment and there’s a wealth of information available in the Visitor Centre.
…and if you don’t fancy the drive let us do it for you!
