Something to celebrate?

There’s always something to celebrate in the summer – end of A levels? Good exam results? An engagement? Family events? And on June 16, of course, it’s Fathers’ Day.

It may be the season for parties in the garden and getting out the barbecue but while dad may be happy doing the cooking, somebody still has to do the clearing up!

Suffolk is blessed not only with lots of beautiful countryside and picturesque villages but also with some of the loveliest country inns for dining out when there is something to celebrate.

Here’s a selection of just a few around the Central Suffolk area, many of them offering the best of English food using locally-sourced ingredients:

Bildeston Crown

The Crown is a 15th century coaching inn in the centre of Bildeston village, with a comfortable and stylish restaurant and brasserie offering lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday as well as afternoon teas from 3-5.30pm on request.

Not so far from Bildeston is Lavenham, the medieval village also featured in our series of Suffolk Jewels.

Lavenham Swan

The stunning 15th century Swan Hotel and Spa at Lavenham is replete with history, luxurious surroundings, oak beamed interiors, open fires and cosy nooks. With 45 bedrooms it is ideal for a weekend family celebration or a relaxing break.

For a special meal out there is the Gallery restaurant with à la Carte menu or try the brasserie for a more informal atmosphere.

Bull Hotel, Long Melford

Another mid-15th century timber-framed hotel with many original features, including moulded oak and an immense inglenook fireplace in one of its lounges.  Rumour has it that the Bull also has its own resident ghost, Richard Evered, murdered in the hotel back in 1648.

Plenty of excellent fare is available in the two dining rooms, the Kentwell and the Cordell, cream teas in the courtyard.

Sorrell Horse, Barham

Family run for 28 years, the Sorrell Horse freehouse is a traditional grade two listed building situated just a short drive from Ipswich in the village of Barham, just outside Claydon

Why not treat yourself to a weekend stay? There is a full a la carte menu and a home made specials board which changes daily.

This is just a small selection of the possibilities for special dining out in rural Suffolk villages. If you’re planning a family celebration why not let Superb Travel Suffolk transport everyone there and back in comfort.
